Lip Colour – Peachy Nudes aka “Candy K” dupes!

If you’re a fan of Kylie Cosmetics’ “Candy K” Lip Kit (without actually owning it, but by admiring the colour on others, lol) and you live in South Africa, then you know/ know of the struggle of paying R800 and above for this gem on online make up shops who import and sell for exorbitant prices. (sigh)

Maybe, I would buy from these sites someday (no, I will not be linking these sites) , but as of now I will enjoy my “dupes” or an affordable version of the expensive product that you wish that you could buy.

I am wearing the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in “Stockholm“.

This colour is definitely my favourite. I feel anyone can rock this colour, regardless of their skin tone.

So far, I only own 6 products of this “shade” (and I will be growing my collection soon lol).

**All prices mentioned below was what I had paid for them at the time of their purchase. Prices may differ now. **

(From left):

  1. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in “Stockholm” – R130.00 (Clicks).
  2. Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in “Nude Thrill” – R109.95 (Dis-Chem).
  3. Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in “Be My Baby” – R124.95 (Foschini).
  4. L.A. Girl Matte Flat Finish Pigment Gloss in “Fleur” – R54.95 (Dis-Chem).
  5. Essence Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss in “Beauty Approved” – R34.95 (Dis-Chem).
  6. Essence Colour Boost Vinylicious Liquid Lipstick in “Woody Rosy” – R54.95 (Dis-Chem).

Any other brand suggestions who sell this colour as well?

What’s In My Makeup Box (WIMMB) – Part 1: Lipsticks

This is part 1 of a series mentioned in the title (WIMMB). I will post different parts based on the make up in my box.

As aforementioned, this is about my lipsticks. I have posted about lipsticks before, but this is my entire lipstick collection (not that many, I know lol).

Without further ado…

(From top to bottom)

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in “Tea and Cookies”.

I’m not really a fan of pale pink and when I initially bought it, I thought it would look a bit different than what is was, on me.

It’s still not a favourite colour of mine, but it will do for the days when I don’t feel like wearing a bold lip.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in “Jet Set”.

Royal blue is one of my favourite colours and what’s better than having a favourite colour on your lips?

Last time I checked, NYX did not stock a matching lipliner for this particular shade yet, so I have been using an eye pencil as a lipliner.

Without a lipliner, this lip cream doesn’t last for two long or maybe I’m using it wrong lol.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in “Stone Fox”.

I love a good, dark grey lip. “Stone Fox” is perfect for that cold, grey winter’s day… any day for that matter.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in “Foul Mouth”.

This colour is like a mixture of “Jet Set” and “Stone Fox”.

It has dark purple undertones and it does not reflect the packaging.

NYX Cosmic Metals Lip Cream in “Electromagnetic”.

This shade is just gorgeous. It’s creamy, it’s glittery, it’s honestly a lovely shade.

Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in “Be My Baby”.

I came across this colour after seeing a beauty influencer promoting it.

I really liked the colour and decided to purchase it for myself.

No regrets. It stays on for long and is a nice, nude colour.

The only thing that I dislike about it, is the actual wand.

You have to hold it a certain way so that the applicator doesn’t erase the colour as you apply it.

Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in “Firestarter”.

Faaaaaave!!!!! I love this colour.

Every woman should own a good red lipstick and this is mine lol.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in “Nude Thrill”.

I was hunting online for a dupe for Kylie Cosmetics “Candy K” (Most companies that import it here charge a lot) and this came up in a few articles that I read, so I decided to give it a try.

I love the colour and I think it’s quite a close match to “Candy K” from what I’ve seen, but there’s too many cons with this lip product:

It smells like potpourri (and it’s not very appealing having that smell wafting into your nostrils every few seconds), it doesn’t last at all (it just fades into nothingness after about an hour) and even though it stipulates that it’s “Matte”, it still has a sheen to it that doesn’t go away even after a good few minutes.

Harsh? No.

Avon Mark Epic Lipstick in “Blushing Beauty”.

A pretty Barbie-ish pink. Honestly, pink lipstick is not a favourite of mine, but like with the NYX Liquid Suede, it’s nice for those not-so-bold lip days.

It’s quite pigmented and has a light glossy texture and look.

Avon Mark Epic Lipstick in “Mermaid Tale”.

Yeeees. Teal lipstick is another favourite of mine.

There’s not much to say about this product other than I love it and that I need an endless supply of it.

Essence Cosmetics Matt Matt Matt Vibrant Shock lipstick in “No To Mainstream”.

This darker green shade is just beautiful. It’s Matte (YES!) and it doesn’t dry out the lips, which is a big plus.

It’s affordable too (Check it out at your local Dis-Chem or Clicks).

Essence Cosmetics Matt Matt Matt lipstick in “Perfect Match”.

This is a gorgeous nude-ish colour with pinkish undertones.

Love it.

L.A. Girl Flat Velvet Matte Lipstick in “Poetic”.

A lighter grey lipstick that glides on easily, smoothly … almost like velvet. 😏

L.A. Girl Flat Velvet Matte Lipstick in “Blue Valentine”.

Navy blue. Yes please.

I am a fan of blue lipstick in general, with the exception of a sky blue shade; it doesn’t suit me at all.

Inglot Matte Lipstick, number 438.

There’s no name on the tube.

I think this is the least favourite lipstick that I own.

It’s actually more of a burgundy colour and not the red that it looks like in the photo.

This particular Matte lipstick dries out my lips and is hard to apply or rather DRY as you try to apply.

Maybe I just got a bad tube????

MAC Matte Lipstick in “Matte Royal”.

There’s a lot of mixed opinions about this shade on the Internet.

I’ve come across articles stating that it’s a purple shade and I think it’s more of a deep blue with purple undertones yes.

You have to apply this shade a few times because it looks a bit patchy after just one or two layers.

Although I like the colour, I won’t buy it again.

That’s it! All of the lipsticks lurking in my make up box.

Do you own any of these???

Essence Cosmetics Haul!

I have been using Essence Cosmetics products for YEARS.

I love that they are so affordable and are of great quality.

*Keep in mind that affordable is NOT the same as cheap.*

I have come across one too many Essence reviews on YouTube of people acting surprised or shocked that Essence is good quality because of its prices.

Why can’t we buy nice things that are affordable??

When certain things are expensive, it’s not a guarantee that it is of good quality.

Ok, mini rant over.

Note: I state the prices from Dischem because they usually have the biggest range of Essence products on hand. has a big range as well, but being an online shop, buying= shipping = waiting = patience = something that you don’t have when you want the make up now lololol}.

  •  Matt Matt Matt Lipstick – “02 Perfect Match”: R46.95 at Dischem and Soft Contouring Lipliner – “08 Big Proposal”: R18.95 at Dischem.
    • I always like a good nude-ish coloured lipstick. (I just saw “matt” and I was like “Yes, let me buy you”). It has a smooth texture and doesn’t dry out your lips.
    • Not much to say about the lip pencil other than it’s a lip pencil. Matches well with the lipstick.
      • I’ll be honest and say I’m not that much of a fan of these two lip products. Maybe it’s the fact that it fades off pretty easily (hmph). Just my opinion, I won’t buy them again. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the teal, greenish colour from the same range. Check it out in a previous post here.

Dr. Martens Collection!

Hello, Dr. Martens!

Let us just take a moment and think about the awesomeness that are Dr. Marten’s boots.

I have a substantial obsession collection. I love the vibrant colours and patterns that they are available in and don’t forget how comfortable they are.

Also, I love it when peoples’ eyes literally glaze over as they stare at my boots and ask me “Is that another one?” 😛

Dr. Klaus Martens was a doctor during World War II and after suffering an injury in 1945, he designed himself some boots that had air cushioned soles.

After having no success in selling the boots, he teamed up with a friend, Dr. Herbert Funck and they started selling. R. Griggs Group Ltd bought patent rights to sell the shoes and business boomed.

(Excerpt from Wikipedia).

Fast forward to today, these boots, initially meant for doctors are worn all over the world by young and old, men and women alike.

I have 9 pairs of original Dr. Martens boots/ shoes.

Feast your eyes on this delicious collection.

* L e t ‘ s  b r e a k  i t  d o w n * :

  • 5 pairs of the 1460 Patent Lamper boots:
    • Royal Blue
    • Red
    • White
    • Black
    • Hot Pink
  • 2 pairs of the 1460 Pascal boots:
    • Glitter
    • Limited Edition Dr. Martens x Sanrio: Hello Kitty
  • 1 pair of the 1461 Virginia shoes:
    • Bubblegum
  • 1 pair of the Polley Mary-Jane shoes
    • Smooth Black.

1460 Pascal boot in Glitter

I think that my favourite pair would be..

A L L  O F  T H E M!!!!

If I was forced to choose, then the Limited Edition Hello Kitty pair which I purchased from That Shoe Lady.

To my knowledge, I only know of two places that currently sell Dr. Martens products here in Cape Town.

They are:

I bought the following pairs at Edgars:

  1. 1460 Pascal in Glitter
  2. 1460 Patent Lamper in Black
  3. 1460 Patent Lamper in Red
  4. 1460 Patent Lamper in Royal Blue
  5. 1460 Patent Lamper in Hot Pink
  6. 1461 Virginia in Bubblegum
  7. Polley Mary-Jane in Smooth Black

and the following pairs from That Shoe Lady:

      8. 1460 Pascal Dr. Martens x Sanrio HK

      9. 1460 Patent Lamper in White

Hello Kitty! How cute is that bow?!

So.. The question is:

Tutorial: My Eyebrow Routine!

Ah, brows… Everyone has their own preference.

Shaped, arched, plucked, waxed, threaded or as is; whatever your eyebrow shape; your face looks “different” when your brows are done in a new way.

I love thick, natural looking brows. I got irritated with going to different places to get my brows done and ended up with them being way too thin and not the way that I wanted to have them done.

(Money saving tip: Do your brows yourself! … Be careful though LOL).

I will be showing you my (newly acquired) eyebrow routine.

I use two products:

  • LA Girl Shady Slim Brow Pencil in GB359 “Blackest Brown” (around R85.00 at Dischem).
  • Essence Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara in 02 “Browny Brows” (around R51.95 at Dischem).

The LA Girl pencil has two ends: the actual “pencil” part which is a twist up and the opposite end which is a spoolie brush.

I discovered this product when I went to have my eyebrows done and the beautician showed me the product she used for after the threading.

Shortly after that I went to buy it and I have been using it ever since. (Since September 2017, so not that long LOL, but it is such an awesome product!!)

B R O W  T I M E ! !

My natural brow (ugh, a pimply forehead due to a newly cut fringe and the fact that I have combination skin!)

(Note: Combination skin = Oily T-zone {Forehead, nose, chin) and dry cheeks)

Step 1: Use the spoolie brush to comb the hairs up that are closest to the bridge of your nose.

The arch of your eyebrow should be brushed downwards as well.

Step 2: Draw a firm, but not a harsh line starting at the bottom from the bridge of your nose until the tip of your eyebrow.

Repeat along the top of your eyebrow, but start your line just after the brushed up hairs and draw to the tip.

Step 3: Draw light strokes and fill in your eyebrow, once again only shading in the length and not the brushed up hairs.

Step 4: Focusing on the start of your brows, use the spoolie to brush the bottom line upwards to the top of your brow.

Use gentle strokes.

Step 5: Ensure that there are no more harsh lines and repeat step 4 if necessary.

Step 6: Using the Essence eyebrow gel mascara, apply to the start of your brows and brush the hairs upwards.

Step 7: Use the spoolie to remove any harsh lines/ excess product from the gel mascara.

Once again, use gentle strokes otherwise you will brush the mascara away.

All done!! .. Now repeat on your other eyebrow 🙂

Have you tried the products that I use?

Did you find this tutorial useful?

I hope so!

It’s that time again!

And by that time, I mean:

W I S H   A P P   I T E M   R E V I E W  !!!

Once again, if you haven’t checked out my first or second review, I ordered items from the Wish app on 10 January – 13 January (a total of 9 items!) from different stores and they are finally arriving!

From the title of this post, items number 3 and 4 are reviewed.

Screenshot from the Wish app

Screenshot from the Wish app

I ordered the pink case for my phone and I absolutely LOVE it.

The black Batman case was for my husband and he is really impressed with it lol.

The packaging.

Hubby was too excited, so he opened his before I could take a photo of it haha.

I P H O N E  6 S  P L U S  C A S E :

I love the bow detail #bowsFTW

It’s a basic soft, gelish case with glitter, bows and diamante stone detailing on the back.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the case costs R12.00, but shipping costs gets added and the total I paid was R58.91 ($5.00) #affordable.

The only thing that I “don’t like” about this case is the fact that one of the “stones” is a bit skew. (I’m being unnecessary, I know LOL, but hey I paid for this!)

Look at that slightly skew stone. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Overall, affordable, it looks good, fits my phone perfectly and it is a full coverage case.

Get yours here.

S A M S U N G  G A L A X Y  S 8  P L U S  C A S E:

How cute is this built in stand though????

This is a black, rubber case with a gold Batman logo on the back and a convenient built in stand.

As you can see from the screenshot from the app, the case cost R36.00, but after shipping I paid R47.17 ($4.00) #affordableaswell

Overall, it fits his phone perfectly, it looks great and the stand is a definite plus.

Get yours here.

Wish App (#2): Chevrolet Seatbelt Shoulder Pads

Another Wish item has arrived (7 more to go!!) and it is a pair of seat belt shoulder pads for my car.

Screenshot from the Wish app

I ordered this item on 11 January 2018 and it arrived on 27 February. (A day later than it was supposed to because the Post Office does not operate on a Sunday).

They are of very good quality and I would totally recommend it. (Obviously, only if you have a Chevy, but I am sure there are for other cars too :P)

Get your own here.

It looks soooo good!

Salvador gives it his stamp of approval

I am waiting impatiently patiently for the next item!

Hopefully, the Post Office will deliver as planned.

Michiko… Ooh, sparkly…

All About My Piercings!

An even number. A nice number. A number that- Okay, the Maths teacher in me needs to take a seat 😀

Twelve is the number of piercings that I currently have.

One, two, three, four….

And another one and another one….

I have a slight obsession with ear piercings. I just like the look of them, tbh.

*Note: The numbers in the photos are just for labeling and not the order in which I got them pierced.

But if you are curious…..

Order of piercings:

  • 6 and 12: Standard lobe
  • 8: Nose
  • 4, 5, 10 and 11: Upper lobe
  • 2: Helix
  • 1: Helix
  • 7: Tragus
  • 3: Upper lobe
  • 9: Scaffold

Pain scale:

  • 0 – What needle?
  • 1 – Was that a pin prick? Meh.
  • 2 – I felt that, but it didn’t hurt.
  • 3 – Okay, that burned a bit.
  • 4 – Maybe I need an anesthetic because that actually stings.
  • 5 – AHHHH! dtgefuiioowopjfhoiap!!!!!!

I am, in no way, a professional piercer or anything along that lines. This blog post is based solely on MY OWN EXPERIENCES. Read at your own risk.

General Comments:

  • It’s better to be pierced with an actual needle and not a piercing gun. A “gun” is likely to cause more scarring and take longer to heal because you are pierced with your jewellery and not a needle.
  • Be prepared for swelling and oozing. Yes. Usually, immediately or the day after you get your piercing, it will be swollen and burning and doing the MOST. That’s because your body is treating your new piercing as an “injury” and it will try and “rectify” the situation, sometimes resulting in your body “rejecting” your piercing = infections, pain, bleeding, discomfort and the jewellery literally pushing out.
  • You need to clean your piercings for at least a month after getting them. Depending on which piercing place that you go to, they should give sell you a bottle of saline solution for the cleaning of your piercing.

All of that just to parade jewellery…

But then it LOOKS. SO. GOOD. #noregrets

*P I E R C I N G  T I M E*

1 and 2: Helix Piercings

Where: Wildfire Tattoo and Piercing, Canal Walk, Cape Town

When: August 2016

Pain Scale: 3

My experience:

I actually got these two piercings a week apart LOL.

My experience at Wildfire was good. I had a different piercer for each piercing. They are so chilled there, everything is clean/ sterile (as it should be in any piercing and tattoo place!).

In my opinion, it freaks you out/ tenses you up more when you see the needle being unpackaged and then it’s just lying on the tiny side table next to your jewellery and then you are like “Yikes.. NEEDLE ALERT. THEY ARE GOING TO PUT A NEEDLE IN ME AND I AM GOING TO FEEL IT AND I AM PANICKING AND I MIGHT PASS OUT AND-” LOL.

Just no.

Don’t look at the needle then you will be okay. Unless you like seeing needles then you do you.

Both helix piercings burned for a moment, but as soon as it was done, my ear just felt hot.

They took just over a month to heal.

3, 4, 5, 10 and 11: Upper Lobe Piercings

Where: Wildfire Tattoo and Piercing, Canal Walk, Cape Town

When: August and September 2016

Pain Scale: 0

My experience:

Upper lobe piercings are the best eveeeeer.

Like it was a walk in the park… or into a piercing clinic.

Also, it healed quite quickly as well.

6 and 12: Standard Lobe Piercings

Where: Clicks, Canal Walk, Cape Town

When: Sometime in 2001

Pain Scale: 0

My experience:

Exactly the same as upper lobe piercings.

Yeah, so my ears were pierced when I was 9 years old in Grade 4.

Clicks at Canal Walk was offering ear piercing (with the beloved piercing “gun”) at the time, so I had them done.

My left ear stung a bit, but I never felt anything on my right ear.

Also, the lady that did it didn’t ensure that they were lined up together so if you have a look at the photos above you will see that the one ear is pierced lower than the other.

7: Tragus Piercing

Where: Wildfire Tattoo and Piercing, Canal Walk, Cape Town

When: September 2016

Pain Scale: 5

My experience:

This was the worst pain that I experienced during a piercing.

Your tragus is quite a thick piece of cartilage, so you can imagine that there will be a bit more “force” used by your piercer to get that needle through.

For me, the needle didn’t go clean through in one push. It went in and stopped and then the second push stung like crazy.

It took over 2 months to heal and some days it is still a bit niggly.

8: Nose Piercing

Where: Wildfire Tattoo and Piercing, Canal Walk, Cape Town

When: January 2016

Pain Scale: 3

My experience:

Ah yes, my favourite piercing.

I wanted a nose piercing for sooooooo long and at last I got it in January 2016. The thing with a nose piercing is that your one eye on the side of which the piercing will be will tear up involuntarily as the piercing is happening.

Yes, you will be crying from one eye LOL, I remember exclaiming out of embarrassment “I’m crying! I’m crying!”, but at the time I didn’t know it’s something that you cannot prevent.

This literally hurt for 3 seconds and then it was over. Apparently, most piercing places do not give you a nose ring initially after piercing because it will need room to swell and a nose stud is ideal.

I was told my nose would take 6 months to heal when in fact, it took only 6 weeks. Everyone is different.

9: Scaffold Piercing

Where:  Faith Love Hope Tattoo and Piercing, Plettenberg Bay

When: September 2017

Pain Scale: 5

My experience:

This is my most recent piercing which I got while I was on honeymoon.

This is my second favourite piercing.

My piercer was so friendly and put me at ease. So basically with a scaffold or industrial piercing, your ear is technically pierced in four places.

After it was over, my husband asked me how it was and the piercer said “Oh, it was a walk in the park” and I wasn’t sure if I had to laugh or cry haha. I think I took that pain like a champ 🙂

The piercings are done. I do not think that I will get anymore…

Tell me about your piercings in the comments!

Water Conscious – Some Beauty Tips

Day Zero. Water shedding. Drought. Newlands’ Springs. “No 5L bottles of water in stock”.

If you’re in Cape Town, this is reality (for now) – Praise God for the rain that He has provided us with!

Although there has been some rain, we still need to conserve water and it’s sad that it’s taken a drought for some people to realise it!

Anyway, here are a few water conscious beauty tips and products to help you do your share in saving water!

1. Girlz Only Dry Shampoo (400ml) – Dischem (R79.99)*

Using dry shampoo is a great way to revive and freshen your hair in between washes.

Dry shampoo is the way to go especially if you tend to wash your hair daily (oily roots) so that you can cut down on your water usage.

Shake the tin well and spray 20cm from your scalp in short bursts. Massage the product into your scalp and brush lightly with any brush/ comb. *A Tangle Teezer (pictured) is highly recommended as it doesn’t break your hair and is easy on tangles.

This 400ml tin is easy on your pocket as well as our dams. (Meaning that you will use less water).

2. Oh So Heavenly Hygiene Waterless Hand Cleanser – Clicks (R11.99)*

Go to most mall bathrooms and you will see that the taps have been turned off and you have to use “the hand sanitiser provided” to “wash” your hands.

While this is not ideal, especially for us females, there are other ways to give you piece of mind that your hands are being.. cleansed.

Stock up on your own hand cleanser to use after bathroom trips, eating, etc. Clicks’ OSH range is affordable and smells great!

Hand wipes (not pictured) is another product to have that well help cleanse your hands and use less water.

3. Skin Essentials 3-in-1 Facial Wipes (60 wipes) – Clicks (R34.99)*

There’s nothing like wiping an entire face of make up off with a cool, cleansing face wipe… :/

Forgo washing your face if you have little to no make up on and use these 3-in-1 wipes from Clicks instead.

They remove make up, cleanse and tone your face, leaving it feeling refreshed and… well.. clean.

Depending on how much make up you are wearing will determine how many wipes you will use at a time.

Clicks often have a 3 for 2 special on these wipes so swipe some wipes when you can.

4. Basics Silicon Sponge “Silisponge” – Dischem (R29.99)*

When applying foundation/ BB cream, etc, it will require a foundation brush and in turn, you would have to wash those brushes after every use.

Save water (and time) by using a “silisponge” to apply foundation that can easily be wiped clean with a face wipe. No mess, no fuss, no water wasted.

5. Cala Cosmetic Wedges (32 pieces) – Dischem (R39.99)*

If you don’t fancy the “silisponge”, how about these disposable make up wedges?

They are convenient and you won’t have to worry about cleaning brushes or cleaning the wedges, so NO WATER WASTED.

6. JT One “Let’s Glow Girl” Fresh Body Mist (200ml) – Woolworths (R69.99)*

Hot weather leaving you feeling Sticky?

Help save water and keep cool by using this body mist.

It smells amazing, absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling refreshed.

There you have it. A few tips to help you save water … beauty wise.

My Favourite Lipsticks!

No, I didn’t place these carefully onto the bed to make it look like I had just thrown them down.

M A T T E/ D A R K  L I P S T I C K??

Yeeeessss pleeeaaase!!!!

As the title suggests, this is all about my favourite lipsticks.

I have an obsession addiction to matte lip products. Lipsticks, lip balms, if it’s matte, I will buy it (within reason of course!)

Currently, I own lip products from:

  • L.A. Girl
  • Essence
  • NYX
  • MAC
  • Rimmel (not included in this review) and
  • INGLOT (not included in this review)

Just from this photo above, I am sure you can see the colours that I really like.. Dark, “uncommon” lip colours.

I say “uncommon” because I don’t see anyone wearing these out on a daily basis (or maybe it’s because I rarely go out or I don’t know a lot of people LOL).

My arm was so stiff. Swatches could be better. Photo creds: Hubby (no thanks to him for not placing the tubes in a straight line :D)

(Note: They are just numbered from 1 to 9 and not ranked as such).

  1. Essence – Vibrant Shock Matt Lipstick – 10 “No to Mainstream” (R46.99)*
  2. NYX – Cosmic Metals Lip Cream – 07 “Electromagnetic” (R145.00)*
  3. Essence – Vibrant Shock Lip Paint – 05 “Nightstalker” (R59.99)*
  4. L.A. Girl – Matte Flat Velvet Lipstick – 825 “Blue Valentine” (R109.99)*
  5. NYX – Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick – 17 “Jet Set” (R145.00)*
  6. MAC – Matte Lipstick – 75 “Royal Blue” (R210.00)*
